ISRO to support Electric Vehicles – as India seeks a sustaining model

India is planning to have atleast 6 million electric vehicles on the road by the year 2020. However, it is yet to sort out related charging infrastructure and shortage of batteries. Various initiatives are considered by government like financial assistance, action plans are considered. It is seeking the help of ISRO to transfer technology on low-cost batteries to the (automobile) industry for its commercial use with the help of NITI Aayog.

Already ISRO had allowed Automotive Research Association of India (an industrial automobile research association) to use 50Ah and 100Ah cells for developing prototypes of an e-scooter and an e-car, respectively. However, longer time for recharging will be a put off for commercial cabs. Swappable batteries carries high risk because of high current and practical challenges.
