Yamaha ventured into India in 1985 by setting up a plant in Surajpur in Uttar Pradesh to produce Rx100 model. In 2001, it became a 100% subsidiary of Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd, Japan (YMC). In 2008, Mitsui & Co., Ltd. entered into an agreement with YMC to become a joint- investor in the motorcycle manufacturing company “India Yamaha Motor Private Limited (IYM)”. The plant has the capacity to produce 1
million vehicles (both scooters and motorcycles). It has 3 vehicle assembly lines and 4 engine assembly lines.
In April 2013, the company has established 2 functionally independent entities namely Yamaha Motor India Sales Pvt. Ltd. (YMIS) that will cater to the sales and marketing needs of the company and Yamaha Motor Research and Development India Pvt. Ltd. (YMRI) that is intended to increase Yamaha’s manufacturing competitiveness through the establishment of an R&D headquarters in India. In April 2018, the company plans to invest Rs. 1000 million to implement BS-VI norms which comes to force by year 2020.It plans to increase the headcount of engineers in Chennai R&D centre from 110 to 200
